| They may be biased, but local residents would claim
that the Howe of the Mearns ranks very high in any list of the North-east
of Scotland's top beauty spots. Bordered by the Grampian mountains to
the west and the Garvock Hill to the east, the Howe comprises rich arable
farmland. |

| Stand on top of the Cairn o'Mount, on the
road which leads to Banchory and Royal Deeside, or even on the much
smaller Garvock Hill, on a spring or summer's day and you cannot fail
to be captivated by the beauty of the valley below. |

The "capital" of the Howe is its largest settlement,
Laurencekirk, while the surrounding villages of Fettercairn, Luthermuir,
Marykirk, Auchenblae, Fordoun, Arbuthnott and Drumlithie, all have their
individual charms and attractions which make them worth a visit.
|
| The area boasts a number of hotels and restaurants
which are delighted to cater for the tourist trade and persuade visitors
to linger a little longer in the Howe. |
