PORTLETHEN

| The suburban settlement of Portlethen has expanded rapidly
over the last two decades. The discovery of North Sea oil and associated
growth of Aberdeen City has contributed to Portlethen growth and
development, primarily as a dormitory town. The town is protected
by Green Belt to the north and south. |

| To the east, a recreational area separates
the recent modern housing developments from the three original fishing
villages on the coast - Findon, Portlethen Village and Downies.
Fishing gradually died out in these villages as the industry became
centralised in Aberdeen. |

Modern Portlethen has developed between the railway
and the A90 dual carriageway. To the west of the A90, the expanding
Badentoy Industrial Estate has a range of occupiers, including major
international oil companies. Out of town retailing, including supermarket
and DIY stores, has also been developed in Portlethen. |
| Nearby the villages of Newtonhill, Cammachmore
and Muchalls also provide a variety of local services. |
