Early Exit in International Masters
The Paramount Hotel in Hinckley was the venue for Tour 3 of the 2006 Strachan International Pool Tour. The event took place between the 26th and 29th April. The event was won by the number 20 seed Ben Flack who defeated fellow outsider Craig Reynolds (22) 8-6 in a close final. In the Club Open event the title was taken by Liam Farrell in defeating 2-time World Junior champion Jordan Church in the final 6-5.
The Tour Event, Darren Matthew got a bye past the Prelim stage and was matched against another new player in Brad Keats in Round 1. An impressive performance saw him to dismiss Brad 7-5 and progress again to the Last-128 where the top 64 seeds join the action. Here Darren was to come up against the in-form number 59 seed, Aaron Roberts, who triumphed 7-6 in a last frame decider. After the match Darren was disappointed not to have produced his best form which would have seen him matched up against another top young player Neil Raybone (6) in the next round. A player Darren has never lost to from their junior days. Aaron went on to lose out to eventual winner Ben Flack 8-6 in the Semi-finals.
In the Club Open, Darren started with a 4-0 demolition of Paul Smith in the Prelims followed by another 4-0 demolition of Andrew McDonald in the Last-128. In the Last-64, however, he was to lose out to Michael Peel for the second event in a row, this time by 4 frames to 2.
The weekend also saw the qualifiers for the televised 2006 International Masters. In this Darren got a bye past Prelim Round 1 and lined up against Martin Davies in the second Prelim Round. In a close match Darren showed some good form but was unfortunate to lose out in the decider 8-7 with some bad luck.
The next event is the World Masters in Blackpool from 9-11 June 2006 and also the World Championships, also in Blackpool, from 5-15 June 2006.
